My Progress on Hosting Own Blog

October 13, 2006 at 11:14 am | Posted in Blogging, Tech | 7 Comments

As I promised before, I’ll keep you update on what’s happening for my progress on hosting my own blog.  So here are the updates.

I’ve done many research on different companies that provide web hosting solutions.  After few times of Q&A with Jeff as well as the web hosting companies’ technical supports, I would like to start with something affordable.  That’s why I chose Giz Technology.

What interest me is their Giz Mini package.  They’re offering 500MB of space, 2.5 GB of bandwidth, Fantastico scripts, cPanel, unlimited POP3 accounts and lots more.  The best offer is they’re offering life time free domain for this package and I’ll just have to pay RM 60 (approximately USD15.79) flat per year.

This package really sounds fascinating to me since I only have to pay a small fees to have a personal space and identity on the Internet.  Anyway, this is my first time.  So, I’ll start to learn how to manage a web hosting account as well as managing my own blog and website.

For my blog, I’ll continue to use WordPress as my blogging platform.  I’ll announce here once the new blog is on.

Apart from that, I’m learning to use a CMS (Content Management Systems)  – Joomla! to build a website.  Joomla! is an open source CMS.  It allows users to build personal as well as commercial website with it’s quite friendly user interface. Various kinds of extensions are available to be installed to add extra features to your website.

I plan to have news feeds, interesting links (education, technology, downloads etc), and might as well provide downloads for applications and games.  Of course, all downloads are legal which would be freeware, shareware or open source.  More contents will be added after proper planning.

So now, I plan to get my blog up first.  In the mean time, I’ll start designing the website using Joomla! and sharpen my skills on CSS and PHP.  To tell you honestly, I’m extremely bad on designing.  Maybe I should find some website templates on the Internet and study from them.

Do you have anything to tell me?  Regarding the web hosting package, my blog, or the CMS?  Thanks for commenting!

The Sims 2

September 27, 2006 at 12:48 am | Posted in Game | 7 Comments

Good news! Some of you might have known that The Sims 2 will have a new expansion called “Pets”!

I’ve been playing this series of games since The Sims 1.   I’ve installed all the expansion pack for The Sims 1, i.e. Vacation, SuperStar, Hot Date, Makin Magic etc (not according to the release date).  And I’m very enjoy playing both of the series.

It’s fun to see your sims grow up and aging (only applies to The Sims 2) from babies to infants, from infanst to children, from children to teens, from teens to adults, from adults to elders and finally from elders to…ghost!

Besides, I like to download customized residential lots, objects, clothings etc from some of the websites.  I often download these interesting items from The Sims Resource and  ModTheSims2.

Some of the contents of The Sims Resource needs you to subscribe to their service in order to download.  But there are also a number of “thumbs up” freebies for you.  Other than that, as a free member you can accumulate some points (Kudos points) to exchange some special downloads.  For an overview of The Sims Resource, you may view it here.

On the other hand, ModTheSims2 provides free downloads for all members.  They even have many game mods for you to download.  For me, I prefer ModTheSims2 because it’s free and it has more download (free of course) compared to The Sims Resource.  For more information regarding ModTheSims2, you may view it here.

I’ll post up new links for download of The Sims 2 if I found any.  By the way, last week was the first time I got my sims parents gave birth to twins!  Hurray!!!  But what a sweat to take care of the two girl babies…And hey, I forgot to snapshot it! Stupid me…Maybe I was too excited.

Barbarian Buyer

September 26, 2006 at 12:14 pm | Posted in eBay, Life, Personal | 3 Comments

I’m very sad of receiving my very first negative feedback at eBay MY. This barbarian buyer has left me a negative feedback for accusing me being rude to her.

I have proof (my emails to her) that I was very polite all along the way. This is so unreasonable. Now, I’m finding ways to get rid of my negative feedback.

How could this kind of person live on this earth? How could she be one of my buyers?

Bargain

September 25, 2006 at 3:33 pm | Posted in eBay, Life, Personal | 10 Comments

I’ve encountered another buyer insisting on paying less on the agreed price of the item that she won. As stated on my listing, I don’t accept bargains. That’s why I’ve included this term on my listing: “Please ask questions before you bid to avoid misunderstanding.”

Consider this: I’m selling a second hand novel which is very new and looked like never read before. I’m selling it in a very low price. So this buyer refused to pay the agreed price and asked for bargain on the shipping charges. Oh man!!! What a buyer!

I’ve replied to her emails very politely (which she thinks I’m rude to her) indicating that I can’t accept her bargain since this is my policy as a seller. In the end, she asked me to cancel the transaction and said I’m rude to her. Oh my!!!

I’ve no choice but to help her cancel her transaction. By the way, I’ve checked her feedback. She had two similar cases with the other sellers. So that means she has bad records before. So I don’t need to feel sorry for her.

In the mean time, I’ve contacted eBay MY’s Support for this issue. Hope they could give me some professional advise.

Do you think I’m too strict on this?

Don’t Discuss Yourself

Don’t discuss yourself, for you are bound to lose; if you belittle yourself, you are believed; if you praise yourself, you are disbelieved.

Consideration

Zi Gong asked:”Is there a word that one should observe throughout life?”

Confucius:”Yes! It is perhaps ‘Consideration’. Whatever one does not wish for one self, do it not unto others.”

Mystic Inn

September 22, 2006 at 11:54 am | Posted in Game | 1 Comment

In this game, you play as a poor girl named Daphne. She was cursed to stay at the Mystic Inn to serve potions to magicians.

This game is similar to Diner Dash 2 – The Restaurant Rescue which you’re required to take orders from the magicians and get the potions from counter and then serve them to the customers.

If you managed to get the required score, you could upgrade your inn and serve more customers! Apart from that, you could play some mini-games which allows you to make special potions to help you serve customers more efficiently.

There are 50 challenging levels in 5 chapters. In these 50 levels, you’ll encounter various kinds of problems such as stealing dragon (A dragon that steals away your potions!), customers going mad because they’re waiting too long etc.

Trust me, you’ll get addicted with this game. (This happened to my husband as he finished the game in few hours)

Overall, I really like this game and the game music. For me, it’s easier to play compared to Diner Dash 2.

What are interesting in this game:

  • 50 challenging levels
  • 5 complete makeovers of your Inn
  • Mix your own power-ups
  • Server orders to go, chase dragons away, learns spells and more!

Some basic information of this game:

Game Title: Mystic Inn

Game Developer: Big Fish Studio

Game Type: Arcade and Action

System Requirements:

  • Windows 2000, ME, XP
  • Pentium 700 MHz
  • 128MB RAM
  • 3D Video Card

PHP, MySQL and Apache

September 21, 2006 at 11:57 am | Posted in Blogging, Tech | 3 Comments

As I mentioned before, I wish to host my own blog. So now, I’m starting to learn PHP. I’m now reading this two books: Sams Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL and Apache (2004 Edition), and Beginning PHP, Apache, MySQL Web Development (2004).

I followed the “outdated” instructions inside the book to install the AMP (Apache, MySQL and PHP). But I can’t make it run correctly. Why I mentioned it was outdated? It is because the AMP version mentioned in the book was older version. It is using PHP 4.3.3, MySQL 4.0.15 and Apache 2.0.47.

So, while I was furious on failing to setup all those required components, my friend Jeff introduced me a very useful and convenient software named xampp. I really have to thank him for this. The xampp really ease my pain.

What I have to do is just download and install. That’s it. I don’t have to do all those configuration for each of the AMP because xampp will do them for me.

For those who want to try this: make sure you don’t have previously installed AMP in your system. Or else, you’ll scratching your head wondering why it won’t work. (This happened to me yesterday, how stupid I was)

My next plan would be learning PHP, installing WordPress 2, and at the same time do some research on different packages of web hosting from different web hosting services.

I’ll post up my results of research after I’m done.

It’s Finally Over…

September 20, 2006 at 11:25 am | Posted in College Life, Life, Personal | Leave a comment

Wow!!! It’s finally over!!! Hm…No big deal.  Yesterday (19/9/2006) was the last day for my exam!

Think of it: I have 5 subjects this semester.  I have to sit for exam for both Advanced Diploma and Bachelor of Science paper.  So, 5 X 2 = 10!!!  I took both papers (for one subject) in one day!  Consider the stress I was facing.

But now, I’m free!!!  Ok, let’s plan of what I’ll do for this semester break.

  1. Continue my Japanese class. (It’s been few months since my last class.  I’m too busy for it)
  2. Learn PHP.  (Yeah, as I mentioned before, I wish to host blogs on my own)
  3. Do some research for my Imagine Cup. (Oh! I never mention this right? I will…In the near future)
  4. Sleep. (My all-time favourite!)
  5. Play computer games. (Which? The Sims 2 and probably will re-replay Diablo II)
  6. Play PS games.  (Which? Final Fantasy XII.  But I’m waiting for the release of US or Europe version.  I’m truly bad in Japanese since I’m just a beginner. :p)

Anything else I missed?  Never mind.  I always changed my mind.  So, are you having holidays now?  What would you do?

Oh by the way,  I realised that I’ve been on the list of “Blog of the Day” and Growing Blog by WordPress.com.   Thank you very much visitors / guests!  It’s you that make my blog appear on the list.  Muaks!
